Thirteen

“Take your pick,” Bianca waved her hand over the array of chips and crackers in front of us.

We were in her kitchen for the first time, and I didn’t see anyone around. Her brother, Alessio, came by and said hi on his way to his room. A new video game came out over the weekend, and he was obsessed.

“Mom had to bribe him to go to school every day this week. She said as long as he went and did his homework right after he would be allowed to play for three hours, uninterrupted.”

I raised my brows. “That’s a lot of staring at a screen.”

“And I swear he doesn’t blink.” She laughed. “Mom’s hoping he’ll beat the game or burn out soon.”

I thought about the guys and how much they love to play the same game over and over again. Hopefully, that wouldn’t be the case with this.

I grabbed a handful of cheddar fish. “I never got the draw of video games.”

She shook her head. “Me either.” She pulled a bag of salt and vinegar chips toward her. “Are you feeling better?”

I swallowed and nodded. “Yeah, it was kind of scary at the time, but I’m fine now.”

“What was it? The flu?”

I paused and she held up her hand. “Sorry, none of my business.”

She was one of the few people in my life who could understand what I went through. “I woke up in the middle of Saturday night in the most pain I’ve ever felt,” I told her the rest of what happened, playing down how embarrassed I’d been that it happened in front of the guys.

“You poor thing! I can’t believe that happened. I hardly get cramps, so I can’t really relate.”

I groaned. “You’re so lucky.”

“Yeah, that’s what my mom says too.” She smiled.

“And they said it could happen again?”

I nodded. “At least I know what to expect and how to ease the pain.”

“So the guys, they all took care of you?”

The way she hesitated with each word, I knew there was more she wanted to ask.

“They were pretty great. I’m still horrified that they witnessed all that and … ugh … Noah washed my clothes.” I covered my face. “There are some things you can’t unsee.”

“He did? Oh, Avalon, that’s so sweet.” She paused and I looked up. “And oddly mature. I don’t think most guys our age would do that.”

I sighed. “I know. He’s one of the good ones.”

They all were, but I wasn’t sure I could tell her that. What if I talked them up and she asked to hang out with them and ended up having a crush on one of them? How would I handle that?

What if one of them liked her? She was beautiful and sweet, and not in love with all of them. That was always a plus.

No, she was on the Society’s radar for a reason. The guys wouldn’t get involved with that.

“So he’s the one you like?” she asked with a small smile.

My heart froze while I debated how to handle this.
